Lesson Title: Parts of Speech

Parts of Speech Lesson Plan

Objective:

Students will be able to identify and define the eight parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection).

Materials:

  1. Handouts with examples of the eight parts of speech
  2. Whiteboard and markers
  3. Sentence strips with examples of the eight parts of speech

Warm-Up:

Review the definition of a sentence as a group.

Ask students to give examples of different types of sentences (e.g. declarative, interrogative, imperative).

Direct Instruction:

Introduce the concept of parts of speech.

Distribute the handouts with examples of the eight parts of speech.

Review the definitions and examples with the class, using the whiteboard to write out sentences and label the parts of speech.

Guided Practice:

Divide the class into small groups.

Give each group a set of sentence strips with examples of the eight parts of speech.

Have the groups sort the sentence strips into piles according to the part of speech.

Have a representative from each group present their sorting to the class and explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice:

Assign a worksheet with various sentences that the students must identify the parts of speech in.

Have the students complete the worksheet on their own and then check their answers as a class.

Closure:

Review the definitions of the eight parts of speech as a class.

Have students give examples of each part of speech.

Assessment:

Use the worksheet from independent practice as an assessment.

Have students turn in their completed worksheets for grading.

Observe students during the sorting activity and take notes on their understanding of the parts of speech.

Extension:

Have students create their own sentences using all eight parts of speech.

Have students present their sentences to the class and have the class identify the parts of speech in each sentence.
